Husband Trevor Allon Royal.
My husband lived in Denbigh Avenue, Fulwell and was bombed out in August 1940 (daylight raid). Hole where bomb landed still visible in Denbigh Avenue.
Lost tricycle.
Sausage cooking on Triplex range for lunch covered in soot.
Husband also emptied school by taking a bullet to show class.
Shell case also in house from H.M.S. Kelly.
Wife Doreen Royal (nee Charlton).
Dad, Fredrick James Charlton, at time Commercial Manager for W.L. Byers, Brookside Gardens, Sunderland (bombed out of Tavistock Place in 1940?). Later Managing Director, did anchorage for Mulberry Harbour (British Section) for D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944. Dad was also in Home Guard based at Drill Hall, Seaburn, Sunderland. Patrolled Fulwell Quarries.
Had underground shelter built in garden with garden on top filled with water. Mother used to drain it by using pump only to find a dead hedgehog.
Remember bombing of Central Laundry, Fulwell Road, Sunderland.
Remember land mine landing in Atkinson Road killing eight members of Miller family.
Mayswood Road, Fulwell, Sunderland bombed - four killed. Our house next street Melbury Court damaged (doors blown off) — barrage balloon eventually put on site once bomb damage cleared.
