We had to run down from school and into the air raid shelters when the sirens went off. When things in Belfast got really bad, we were evacuated to Ballymoney. My Mother used to come to the country to see us every month. She would bring us sweets bought with the coupons she got. She also gave us pocket money, three pence pieces in a wee money box, so that when we got home we would have some savings. We were there for three years. We missed our mum but were lucky as she came so regularly. When I got home to Belfast I went to school for six months. Then I got my first job, at Gallagher's Tobacco factory in Belfast.
