My Granddad

What did you do in the ware Granddad?
Where did you go in the war,
You鈥檝e never told me before,
Why was it all so horrible,
Why did you all have to go?

My Mam and Dad did tell me,
But what was it all for,
Well, son, we fought for King and country,
Our duty as you know,
To fight for freedom in our land,
Against an evil foe.

Young men from every walk of life,
Blossomed in their youth,
Ventured to a pitted world,
So strange and yet so uncouth.

We fought in the fields of Falanders,
When the poppies were in bloom,
The no mans land of our fathers,
Deep in red and gloom.

We sailed from our resplendent shores,
Their whiteness to our kin,
Sons of our own flesh and blood,
To conquer worldly sin.

So, light up the beacons and let us pray,
For the many who made this our special day,
Let the symbol of peace bring to the fore,
That light band of friendship
Returning once more.

So, Grandson, as we grow old,
Our memories are few,
But their sacrifice made,
For children like you.

So, a friendly hand and a happy smile,
And all you need to say,
Is thank you for my Mam and Dad,
And thank you or today.
