What I remember most I think is night time when we went to bed. I was the eldest, about nine, and I had two stepsisters who were youngsters, about two and four. The ritual was that I had to put on a thick woollie and trousers over my pyjamas when the warning came, and grab all the bags and take them down to the shelter while my stepmother looked after the two youngsters. My dad was in the homeguard so he wasn't there most of the time.
In the Battle of Britain when they had all the dogfights we had a bomb in the garden while we were in the shelter. We had a wooden door that you used to pull in and shut behind you. I'd been outside with my dad watching all the aeroplanes and they were getting a bit near with the bombs so we got inside and one came into the garden. All the dirt went on it and we couldn't get out and that was what was scary. We were dug out, but we were stuck down there for about half an hour till the air raid wardens came. I was scared stiff and of course my step sisters were screaming, but we got out in the end!
