As a child I never thought I would be grateful to the big spreading beech tree close to my home. The morning after the Coventry blitz we discovered our roof missing, but did not realize that we would not only have lost our house, but our lives if the parachute of a German landmine had not got caught in the branches of that beautiful tree. Thanks to the brave men who removed the detonators and the stout branches of that tree, I have lived to tell this story.
