My child hood was spent under a Morrison Table as a safety measure against the ceiling falling down on me.
Mum and Dad had the Ship Inn outside Romford, Dad was absent during the war serving as an Air — Crew instructor. Mum obtained a Morrison Table as a precaution against bombing. The table was an iron frame about 2ft high- 2ft.6in wide and 5ft long. Although you could eat off it, it was meant for me as a kid of 3 to 4 years old to sleep under. It worked, the pub wasn’t bombed.
The table was designed by Herbert Morrison. I cannot be sure what his role was, whether it was Cabinet Secretary, or Home Secretary.
