Michael's father Stan had a farm next to Darlington Aerodrome. A Lancaster, coming back from bombing Germany, crashed on the farm, and Stan saw the plane come down. The crew didn't survive, and the Lancaster was badly burned. Personnel from the aerodrome rushed over to the crash site but could not save the crew. The farm kept the family supplied with food, and they did not charge for the surplus, giving it instead to those who needed it.
