1938 Homelands such a long time ago and yet many times a flash back of names, faces and events come to mind.
We had one year of normal school routine, privileged girls in a brand new modern building, my previous schooling was at Army schools as my father was a regular soldier.
Memories of the bag of shoes on our first day, the labelled clothes, those awful hats worn at every angle, skirts 5鈥 above the knees when kneeling 鈥 much to my Father鈥檚 horror! The joy of a Science lab with experiments, fantastic gym (which I hated) and lots of outside activities.
Came that day in September 1939 and our world turned upside down, barrage balloons and airmen on the front lawn, blacked out windows, air raid shelter practice. A siren sound which still gives me a funny feeling all these years on.
Happy memories of the days at Mammerton Farm gathering in the harvest, picnic lunch in the fields (I loved swapping Sybil鈥檚 vegetarian sandwiches!) Eating the damsons off the trees as we worked. Packing up Army parcels was another worthwhile task.
We were expected to work hard but I look back with fondness on my years at Homelands, we were lucky to have this start in life
