We lived at Huyton, Liverpool. A friend George Hurst, worked at the Stanley Abattoirr, Liverpool. Every couple of months he would appear at our house, take his shirt off and wrapped around his waist was layers of beef fat. My mother bought it from him and rendered it down in the oven. It then became beef dripping. This was used as a substitute for butter, we had beef dripping butties. To cover her costs she sold some on to neighbours. I have just been looking at a school photograph from 1949, not a fat kid in sight, unlike the modern kids.
