This story was submitted to the People's War site by Lin Freeman of Radio Derby CSV on behalf of Mr Bernard Longstaff and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

When I was at a place called Oakinton, a RAF centre in Lincolnshire, our job engineerwise was to receive X number of aircrafts in at different times. We had to service many different aircrafts in different numbers quickly.
On one occasion my job was to see in a Sterling aircraft four engine bomber.
What surprised me was the pilot who got out of the aircraft appeared to be on HER own. A youngish lady with no RAF personnel. We eventually found out that there was a unit of these ladies who flew military aircraft about, perhaps delivering them from factories to military bases.
