I lived in Buxton. At school we learnt to knit socks for the soldiers. We didn't have many air-raids in Buxton but there was an RAF Station nearby, so they were after that. We used to do well dressing, but it was cancelled during the war. I missed it.
My father was an air-raid warden. He had to help clean up an area after a bomb dropped.
I didn't like it at all, I didn't like going underground during the raids. Mum had to comfort all of us (Joan and Keith were my brother and sister.) We were all scared.
At school, if we forgot our gas masks we had to go back and fetch them.
I remember the street parties on the road on V.E day. We were so happy.
