When I was 18 I became a Bevan Boy. There was a lottery and I got picked and worked in Staffordshire. There was a big mistake allowing people to volunteer to work in a coal mine. I desperately wanted to get out. In the end the bosses said that if we didn't straighten up they would put us in the Army, which was what we wanted anyway.
