Have you ever wondered what it was like as a child watching the bombers? Here's a memory of mine from our home at East Peckham in Kent

Our address was 4, Newhouses, Little Mill. I was only five or six at the time, but I remember hearing the doodlebugs coming over. I particularly remember seeing a searchlight picking one of them up, and watching as a spitfire chased it and brought it down. I saw a flame coming out of its back. I wasn't old enough to feel fear.

I had one older sister, and one younger one. I remember the air raid sirens going off -- two a week, perhaps? -- always in the evening -- we went to an air raid shelter in a neighbour's garden. I'm not sure how safe it was, to be honest -- it was certainly gloomy! And boring, too.
