During the war some children came to Melling and they stayed in local houses. Mr Simon did not have to look after an evacuated child because he was training in Egypt, for the war. Local schools were very busy because of the evacuated children.
Mr Simon was in the army, so he was able to eat a lot of food for energy, but people who where not in the war had rations and were only allowed to eat as much as they were given.
People were very happy because we had won the war and everyone could be at peace. People were very nervous because the Germans could take over Britain if they won the war. It was annoying having to carry a gas mask everywhere, but you could tuck chocolate in to the box, which was useful.
You were not scared that a bomb was going to hit your house; you always thought it was going to hit a different house and not yours.
The war did not stop on Christmas Day, but it went quiet.
Bombs were not always going off, it went busy and then quiet. During the war it was normal battle dress, it was Khaki not camouflage.
