the incident i shall never forget happened on the 13th February 1941 my mother and grandmother had gone to a meeting along west hendon broadway it was for air raid wardens and other such like at 20.00hours.
i went upstairs to my grandfather and aunties and my sister stayed downstairs with our father. i had gone to show them my knitting from school when all hell was let loose the five neighbouring roads were bombed.
No air raid warning was sounded the wireless was playing "i'll walk beside you" which in hindsight proved to be the case.
the lights went out and the house filled with dust etc and as a girl of 11 years old my only concern was my knitting from school in case i got told off for loosing it.
the stairs had collapsed and my father downstairs was in the cupboard under the stairs which housed my mothers pickles. a jar of red cabbage emptied on my fathers head which caused him to think that his head had been cut and his brain was falling out.
Police and wardens were trying to get us all to the shelters and the ever present salvation army was providing tea. Then my mother and gran eventually found their way home and began searching for us.
i lost some school friends that night and we had to move home which meant nothing was the same again.
