During World War 2 my husband was a civil defence ambulance driver, and was based at Gulson Road First Aid Post. One night he was sent to Wallace Road where some houses had been bombed. While sitting in the ambulance waiting for ther rescue teams to get the injured peoples out of the houses, he saw a tiny baby lying amongst the debris in the road.
He picked up the child and nursed it in the ambulance, but soon realised that it was dead. This upset him very much and for ages afterwards he would say he couldn't get the sight of that tiny baby out of his mind.
