The Roberts Family
The Roberts Family; Wilf, Elva, Elizabeth (Betty), Kenneth and Kathleen, are seen, pre-war, soaking up the summer sun at their home, 4 Woodlands Road. On 17th April 1942, a bomb falling between two shelters was to change the family for ever. Only the seriously injured Kenneth was to survive, spending many months in a coma. 20 year old Kenneth had chosen to stay in his bed, in the family home, refusing to go to the shelter as the sirens began.
Kathleen was due to be married on the following Saturday. Instead, this became the day that the family was burried in Hull.
At the time of their deaths, Wilf was aged 42, Elva 43, Kathleen 21 and Betty 15.
We would like to thank Mrs Brenda Simpson, of Blenheim Street, for her genersosity in loaning this picture to Hullwebs and for the time she spent sharing her wartime memories with us. Her memories are soon to be published on this site.
