My father always told me a story about being a Bren gun carrier driver. One day a group of them were crossing the road, and a sniper started firing at them. They had to run back and jump into the ditch at the other side of the road.

As he did so, he felt a bullet hit him in the back. He put his hand to his back and saw this red stuff which he thought was blood… But when he actually removed his kit bag, he found that the bullet had gone through a knife, fork and spoon and ended up in a tin of jam!

He carried the bullet with for the rest of the war….

He was only about 18 years old at the time…….
