An evacuee, who spent four years away from London but returned home before the end of the war, recalled his memories of the day as a 12-year-old.

He said: "I was at home with my mother, we had got the radio on and heard that the war was won and that Germany had surrendered."

Mother and son took the bus to the West End to celebrate, but could get no further than Whitehall because of the hordes of people on the streets.

Street parties were the order of the day with trestle tables, wooden chairs, white paper tablecloths and fairy lights.
