I was out shopping with my small son when the air raid sirens started. I stopped in New Cross Road to ask a lady if I could share her air raid shelter as there was only her and her daughter. When the all clear went I started on my way home but the air raid sirens started up again. The planes were circling overhead and they bombed a school in New Cross Road. The bombing was very intense and I didn't know which way to run, as one of the German pilots was machine gunning us. The plane was flying so low that I could see the pilot clearly. I saw a telephone booth and without thinking ran inside to take cover. Realizing how foolish it was to hide in a glass telephone booth, I ran out again and lay in the gutter with my son. A lady next to me was shot in the head.
When the planes disappeared I ran home.
I also remember the Surrey docks being bombed. I was at the butchers in New Cross Road when the fire engines started coming from all directions, rows of them all with their bells ringing. The noise was terrific and my son was screaming. The flames from the docks were sky high. There was a lot of tea and sugar as well as timber stored there. It was a terrible day.
