It was a January night in 1945. I'd been in the WRNS for a mere couple of months, and was approaching my eighteenth birthday. I was training to be a Radio Mechanic. After an initial spell at Mill Hill llearning the rudiments of sqquare-bshing, naval jargon and so on, we rookies were training at Walthamstow Technical College. The other students were civilians, but there were two classes of wrens, and one of sailors, in uniform, respectively 4a, 4b and 4c. Heaven only knows why I had been appointed class leader of 4b by the powers that be! Perhaps because I was an incredibly naive girl straight from a convent, and they hoped I might develop ssome maturity given this responsibility. (to be continued)
