In 1940 my father-in-law, Charlie Martin, was a fitter in the naval dockyards at Portsmouth. He lived in the town with my mother-in-law, Daisy, and their first child, John, who was then a baby. One night while Charlie was working in the dockyard there was a tremendous bombing raid which seemed to go on and on. Terrified, Daisy sat under the stairs clutching the baby; knowing that the bombers were targetting the docks and praying that Charlie would survive. In the morning when he returned home Charlie commented that Daisy looked different; her hair looked dusty. At the age of twenty-seven Daisy's hair had begun to go white. Within weeks the fransformation was complete.
