One Tuesday night, the air-raid warning went off. Mum was wearing her light green pajamas. She got us out of bed and downstairs into the kitchen at 28 Shaxton Crescent, - she told me to sit down on the floor under the kitchen table; then she sat my baby brother in front of me, and told me to hold on to him. He had his back to me, and I put my arms tight around his chubby little body, and held him close to me, to keep him safe; under the kitchen table!
Mum said, ' They sound different. They're not the same.' She went outside and called the Feasy's, the next-door neighbours. 'They don't sound the same. What do you think they are?'
Nobody answered.
Mum came back in and sat with us under the kitchen table.
Then the droning suddenly stopped. We heard an explosion far away.
That was the first time we heard a buzz-bomb.
