During the war I was in the 1st Battalion Hereford Regiment. I was always a bit of a naughty lad - a character!
This particualr time I was on Officer's Mess Fatigues (Jankers!). The King was coming to our base in Brandon, Norfolk. Fruit was rationed so for weeks beforehand the fruit ration was conserved in order to bake a cake for the King. I was in the kitchens. The cook put the freshly baked cake out to cool... I stole the cake and took it back to our hut!! Me and my pal, Spike Malloney, swore all the other lads to secrecy and then shared the cake out between everyone. It was smashing!
Next day, SIB (Special Investigations Branch) arrived at the barracks and were on their hands and kneees around my bunk with magnifying glasses looking for crumbs! They found nothing - but I was never on Officer's Mess duty again!!
I said I was naughty... I once served 56 days detention in Colchester Military Prison for missing a train. Mind you, I missed the train by two weeks... but she was a lovely girl!!!
