During the war our school Deansfield Rd School Eltham decided to evacuate its pupils. As the school was split into boys and girls it was ruled that if you had a younger sister in the girls school you had to be evacuated together.
At the time my father was an Air Raid Warden and later he was called up and joined the RAF. I could never really get him to talk much about what he had done but I do know that he was a radio decoder. Nothing to do with Enigma but he did have knowledge of the German language and he operated a mobile radio unit that toured around I suppose searching for any radio activity.
Back to the evacuation, we said goodbye to our parents at the station and although there were a few tears, we had been learning about the forthcoming war for maybe a year before and of course we had been carrying our gas masks around for some time as well. I also felt a sense of excitement and aprehension. I'm sure therer were a few tears, but as big brother, I was in charge!
