I lived in Dagenham, and I remember my husband making a hammock in the air raid shelter for our daughter to sleep in. I can also remember the sight of everyone running to the shelters carrying their dinners with them. It was quite funny really.
When I was expecting my second child, we were issued with a metal cage type shelter to go in the bedroom. I used to just roll in and out of this if the sirens went. Eventually, I was evacuated to the country. I can remember the soldiers on the train, and can remember being chosen at the station when we arrived — but I never did find out where we were! I had a lovely time, but just don’t know where it was.
I managed to get back home to Dagenham in time for my second child to be born.
My husband used to work in the Ford factory at Dagenham, so was excempt from service.
To be honest, I don’t know how we got through that time.
