I was in Coventry for the whole of the war and saw a lovely little city and its beautiful cathedral demolished.
My house was hit and I lost everything apart from my life and children. When I got bombed out the Salvation Army found me a flat on the 16th storey. I was in such a state the doctor told them to move me.
I had a large pram, and whenever the raids were on I would put the three children in it and go for a walk. I never went into a shelter. They made a shelter of a cinema and it was hit, and there was a gas leak. There was a huge death toll and nobody would go on the ground afterwards.
We would all be waiting for Doodlebugs. You鈥檇 hear them droning and then they鈥檇 come down. There wasn鈥檛 much of Coventry left after the Blitz. Houses went down like packs of cards. Most houses had some sort of damage but others just went down as though someone had pushed them.
