This story was told to East Ayrshire Library Staff by Catherine Roy during a People’s War Tea Party at the Dick Institute on 27th April 2005.
Cathy told the story of her father – James – who was exempt from military service because of a heart condition. However, he continued working as an engineer at Renfrew. As part of the war effort he was co-opted to assist with the Clyde River Patrol – part of whose duties was bomb disposal.
Apparently, German bombers after an air raid would jettison crates of unused bombs into or near the river Clyde on their way home. Part of James’s duties would be to disarm or dispose of these bombs – even though he had a heart condition
