My father Sargent John P. Yellend, a member of the Royal Berkshire Regiment was a "chindit" serving in India and Burma during the last war. The offical time for the finish of the war was VJ day which was August 1945, but many of the troops were not home at this time for it took ages to get them home. I was born in December 1942 so by the time my father first saw me I was quite a "grown up" little girl. He had converyed to my mother he liked Jean as a name for me, so on my birth certificate Jean held pride of place followed by Rosemary my mother choice. After nearly three years of being called Rosemary, a starnge man arriving home and calling me Jean was quite a shock. My only contact with my Dad had bbeen by drawings that he had done for me with little messages on them to "his little girl". When he eventually came home I can rememeber great celebrations in our communtiy at Sydenham in South East London for the war hgad caused a lot of devistation to property and people in the area.
