My goodness is it really sixty years on May 8th, that after all of 6 years of war it finally ended! How I remember that day! Walking down the road in my new summer sandals they were coloured green and clog like, having wooden soles and heels, they were the height of fashion at that time, it was quite an event to have new shoes or clothes as they were scarce and could not be obtained without coupons and then one had to queue to get them.
I went to the school room to help to prepare tea for the afternoon celebration. I then later went to join in the tea. I was asked to sing, and I remember that I sang, 'I don't want to walk without you Baby' ('Twas a 40's favourite). (My fiance at that time was away in the army!) I was complimented by the older people, and they remarked that they liked my style, Ah! I did not know that I had one! (I was seventeen.) Later that night a Bonfire was lit at the bottom of the road and we all danced around it. How could one forget that day?!
