I was 17 when war broke out. In a way I found it very exciting. Frightening but also exciting. I was going to a commercial college at the time, studying to take the civil service exams, but they were cancelled because of the war.
I went into the Ministry of Labour to do my war work. I used to have to register men for the forces, often having to work weekends as well because we were so busy.
I enjoyed the work and some nights we had to take it in turns to firewatch. When we did this we all stayed over night at the Ministry.
We all used to muck in and cook supper together. I really loved my new found freedom.
The ladies and men had separate rooms and we locked ourselves in because the men often tried to get in to us!!
