When the Germans rampaged through Poland at the beginning of the hostilities, they razed a village, Ludice, and slaughtered all the inhabitants in retaliation for an action of defiance by one person. However, at least one resident managed to escape - a little girl.
Through some wonderful underground network she eventually got to a Mediterranean port and eventually to Egypt and then Cairo where I was working. She was living in the large Fifty First Highlanders hospital where I understood the nurses spoilt her wonderfully.
As I was walking along the veranda - having visited a friend in the hospital, I turned on hearing an odd squeaking noise behind me and this child just ran out of a side room. She was a very sad sight indeed, badly burned or defaced with a head which appeared to be growing prickles. I never heard what happened to her in the end.
