My mother's cousin, George Sampson, was in the navy during the war. His ship was torpedoed in Bermuda and George helped bring people ashore by swimming back and forth between the vessel and the land.
When the people of Bermuda heard what he'd done they treated him as a hero. Unfortunately, he was wounded himself and took pneumonia 2-3 months after the incident. My 'uncle' died in Bermuda. He's buried there and the people of the town look after his grave. There is a street in Carnoustie named after George. It's called either Sampson Crescent or Sampson Road. George was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery during the war.
I would like to know more about George and the whereabouts of his Victoria Cross. I would be very grateful if people could respond to this message.
