‘As the CSM's Orderly Corporal one of my duties was to requisition rations in accordance with the number of men on the strength. Embarkation leave was still proceeding and what with some men going on leave and some returning it became an impossible task as far as accuracy was concerned.

"I can only say I muddled through. Thanks to my calculation the cooks were never short of food.

"As Orderly Corporal I kept clear of a lot of the humdrum side of training such as square bashing, rifle drill and incessant kit inspections.’

This story was submitted to the people’s War site by a volunteer from CSV Oxford on behalf of the late Bill Harvey. It is a transcript of his own diary and several interviews. He gave written permission for the material to be edited and published.
