I was only seven years old when the war started, and I was evacuated from Manchester to Derbyshire. I had to separate from my parents. I wasn't there for long because I wasn't very happy with the family there, so my mum decided to take me to my grandmother.

I came back to Burnage, Manchester, when I was eleven, and I went back to school. I finished school and started working when I 14. A year earlier my father died, just aroung D-Day.

I didn't have many happy times during the war. - Maybe except when I was off school...
