I was 11 when the war broke out and father was away building RAF stations. Mother and I had 2 allotments to keep. We grew vegetables and fruit and kept chickens at home. The allotments were quite near to where we lived and mother and I had to do all the work on them, which I loved. When we were at school we were allowed a day off school at certain times to go pea and potato picking or corn stooking. It was our war effort.
Working on the allotments and in the garden during the war lead me to a career in horticulture and lead to a lovely way of life.
