Towards the end of the war when I was about 6 there were bombing practices during the day and the night. The night time ones were so loud that although they didn't frighten us, we couldn't sleep for the noise.
The target was out in the bay (and it looked closer than it was.) They dropped a flare every now and again which would light up the sky like daylight and the planes would come in and drop two bombs at a time - making an awful noise.
This would go on for hours. The summer time was the worst - with the light nights. We'd want to stay up later - especially in the holidays.
This was great for my mum - I can hear to this day 'Come on children - up to bed before the bombs.' It worked a treat as we did not want to be kept awake as we had been many a night.
