My daughter Maureen was born in 1942. If you were considered healthy and there were no complications you were sent to a hostel outside Stratford where there were no qualified medics. It was considered to be safe as there were no air raids in this area.
I had kidney troubles when I had Maureen and so I was taken to the Sorrento Maternity Hospital in Wake Green Road in Moseley, Birmingham. When there was an air raid the nurses would put as many babies as possible in the prams (sometimes 3 or 4!) and took them to the shelter. The mothers had to follow as best they could.
