I very clearly remember September 3rd 1939. The year before we all were ready for it.
On the day war was declared I and two friends volunteered to be wardens or something similar. We were turned down for being too young, we were fifteen.
I'm not sure if any of us youngsters thought it would be real now. However, real it was. About half an hour after Chamberlain's declaration the air raid siren went off.
False alarm of course, but it convinced me at least this WAS real.
I went to the local cinema on the next Wednesday, and came home to my father going mad because I'd gone to the pictures!
After that life went on much as usual for a few months.
