My granddad is Norwegian. His dad had been fighting with the Norwegian forces in Narwik in 1940 against the German forces. Therefore it was not safe for them to stay in Norway. In the summer of 1945 the whole family decided to flee to Sweden which was a neutral country during ww2.
I was 18 years old when my dad got a letter saying we all needed to flee to Sweden. So we packed all the stuff we could carry and cycled as well as taking the buss to Oslo. It was about 400 miles from my home town to Oslo. My sister who was 13 years old at the time found it very hard to cycle and I can remember her complaining a lot. We lived in Oslo for a week whilst my dad had secret meetings with a man who could help us get to Sweden. We then took the train to Soulia and slept there. In the middle of the night my dad woke me up and we took a truck down to the sea, the truck was very stuffy because there was another family of 4. We had to be very quiet. Then me my sister and my parents took a boat with the other family we had met on the way. The boat was very small and it took roughly half an hour to get to the outskirts of Sweden. The boat took us to a small island smaller than we had expected. A man asked us if we were on our way from Norway my dad said yes, but we did not know if it was the right answer. We were very relieved when he took us down to the boat he then took us to our new house.
I stayed in Sweden for half a year then traveld from there to Canada and learnt to fly there. I then became a member of the royal air force.
