One of my worst experiences in London was passing Bank tube station just after it was bombed. They were bringing out all the people who had been sleeping down there when it happened, and I had never seen so many dead bodies.
However, far worse for me was being called down to the basement of our barracks by one of the Pioneer Corps. These were old soldiers, past fighting age, who were general helpers, and one of them came to me, as the junior officer in charge, and said, 鈥淭here鈥檚 something in the incinerator, come and look.鈥 And there, in the incinerator, were the remains of a new-born baby. I was horrified, but even more horrified when the mother was identified. She came from a good family 鈥 her father was a naval officer. What shocked me was that she did not protest, but was completely removed from the situation, and said, quite matter-of-factly, that she just had to get rid of it, and the incinerator was the obvious route. I don鈥檛 know what happened to her 鈥 they just took her away.
