On our way to school in the early summer of 1944, I was eleven years old, I called for my friend Chris [who is now my longest friend, known each other for 67 years!] to go to school at Mora Road, and his Mum came out to tell us that the Germans were sending over aeroplanes without pilots! How silly we thought... but as we all know now how true.
Later that summer the Doodlebugs started to come over, we, Mum Dad and myself were having tea when we heard this terrible din in the sky, Dad didn't wait to go out through the door he just jumped out of the window, it was a good job we were on the ground floor! This would have been the first V1 to come over Cricklewood!
We always thought that they were being aimed at the Cricklewood Loco marshalling yards, only minutes away from Ashford Road, where we lived. Soon after that we went to my Aunties place at Park Street, Radlett. Not far away but it made us feel safer!
