It was a hot summer day on the 17th August 1944, I was only four at the time and I can remember the event very clearly.
I had been to my friends to look at some rabbits, on the way home I saw a small aircraft against the blue sky and the wing fell off. I ran home and told my mother what had happened. We thought it must have crashed at Theberton. My mother put me on the back of her bike and we peddled to Theberton, but it hadn鈥檛 crashed there.
We continued on to Middleton, where we found the remains of a smouldering aircraft in a stubble field. Already a group had gathered and my mother asked about the pilot. He was dead and was still in the aircraft. The aircraft was a P-51B Mustang and was flown by Lieutenant Charles Campbell of the Leiston Airfield.
