During the second world war my dad was taken prisoner at st valery. He survived serious bullet and shrapnel injuries and was transferred from stalag 141 to the Val de Grace hospital in Paris. It was here he was contacted by a French agent. My dad was lowered to the ground with tied bed sheets and was given refuge at a convent where he had to dress as a nunand wear highheeled shoes many sizes to small.Eventually he was taken to a French underground base where an escape route took him through Marseilles Spain and Gibralter where he boarded a navy warship for the passage home.Unluckily though, this ship was damaged by German shells and had to return to Gibralter and he was put on another ship.He did make it home and has many amazing stories to tell about the war years. Most of my generation have only known peaceful times and will never know the hardships that these old war heros had to endure.
