As I was aged 11 in 1939 and had passed the 11 plus examination in that year I joined St.Philip's Grammar School in September 1939.
The School was evacuated immediately on the outbreak of war to Hereford. I was fortunate to be billeted with a husband, wife and one son of almost my age and was treated as a second son.
Although I rarely saw my parents for weeks on end, I thoroughly enjoyed living in my new home situated in a County town. For schooling St Philip's shared the Hereford Grammar School buildings -mornings for the residents and afternoons for us. Unfortunately, one of my classmates was drowned in the River Wye.
By Christmas 1939 it was considered safe for the School to return to Birmingham although I kept in touch with the Hereford family for many years until they died.
