Hawker Hurricane
Standing behind my ancient Lewis machine gun I kept a sharp watch out for possible enemy fighter planes as we struggled to protect Jersey's state airport from possible attack. Suddenly, out of the blue came a monoplane which I readily recognised as a Hawker Hurricane. It landed somewhat clumsily and when it taxied towards me I saw the reason. The fusillage was peppered with shell holes and the perspex hood hung loosely at a crazy angle. The pilot found out and looked at the damage somewhat ruefully. "Beware the Hun in the sun" he exclaimed. He then asked if I had a piece of string to help himetie up the damaged perspex hood. I had not got any string on me but I knew where there was a length. Shouting across to the guard commander I asked to be relieved for a couple of minutes. I got the string out of my kitbag and handed it to the young pilot. Unfortunately it was a little too short so I peeled off my army belt which was not essential as I also had braces on. He successfully tied up the damaged hood. A few minutes later he taxied down the runway to his base in England which was at Middle Wallop.
