Mr Swindells landed on the Normandy beaches a few weeks after D Day. His company still sustained heavy shellfire from the Germans and they were caught in a stailmate for 14 days.
Eventually the company was able to make its way across France and stopped at lubeck in North Germany.
Mr Swindells marrried at St Mary's Church Tunstall in 1941.
