My five brothers were all in the war right from the start and they were in the army, navy and air force. They were involved in the battles in Europe, North Africa and the far east. My eldest brother was in the navy when his ship was sunk at whilst evacuating and he survived for a number of hours hanging onto pieces of driftwood. As he was beginning to lose his hold on life our mother (who had been dead for around 4 years) appeared before him in a vision and told him to 'hold on as it wasn't his time yet'. Eventually he was picked up by another boat and taken back to England. Luckily all five brothers survived the war unlike many families who lost sons and daughters.
One of my sisters did her bit by joining the land army.
It was weird as I was quite young and didn't realise the full scale of the war until now.
