This is a story which was told at my Grandads funeral, One which i never knew about and one from what i can gather which was rarely fortold. Before i begin i would like to appologise that i know not all the story, dates or times but i will try to recount the story as best i can.
The story begins in France, In a field hospital near the time of the great deliverance at Dunkirk. Sidney my grandfather was in the hospital being treated for an ailment or wound when the alarm was raised that the German infantry were marching down the road and directly towards the hospital.
With little time to spare he grabbed what he could of his kit and along with another patient made there way outside. Looking in the distance sure enough there was the German war machine rolling towards them!!!
There seemed to be little hope of escape with two injured or ill Tommys trying to out run a whole platoon of German foot soldiers. There attention was grabbed by a nearby wooded area and there thoughts turned to one of evasion and not of escape.
Into the woods they both fled over sticks, leaves and through undergrouth they made there way until by chance they found a tree which they both thought they could climb, So slowly they made there way up the tree branch by branch till they could go no further.
Worn out there both of them sat scared to breathe as they watched the mighty German army march beneath the tree they sat in. Aware now that they were probably behind enemy lines they decided they were best served to wait where they were for a while.
Slowly the weariness took them and they both fell asleep. later that night Sidney in a deep sleep tried rolling over and fell from the tree landing hard on the floor. Making some noise i should imagine.
This i am afraid is as much as i know, Apart from Sidney somehow got out from France and back to England. Due to an injury (which i am not sure was the same one as he had in France) Was then posted to ground crew in Malta.
Sorry if the story is vague in places my Grandfather was quite a modest and private man. I will try and learn more from my father but feel it maybe a bit soon after my Grandads death to ask unfortunately pneumonia done something hitler never did and he died earlier this year (2004). He will live on in my memories and i hope to become just half the man Sidney Pearce Snr was. Love you Grandad.
