Below is a memoir written by Mrs. Jean O'Connor typed by Christine Pearce of Neath Port Talbot Libraries and added to the site with Mrs. O'Connor's permission.
It was during the blitz on Swansea. I well remember my father picking me out of bed, wrapping the eiderdown around me, carrying me to the window and saying, "now look at this, you might never see such a sight again". The searchlights were up and you could hear the explosions from the bombs being dropped. Three bombs dropped that night - one outside the Grand Hotel near the Station, one sliced right through a house in Pistle Hill in Penycae.
The following day I walked up to Pistle Hill to see the damage. It was amazing - the front of the house had been sliced through and you could see all the rooms intact. It was just as if the front of the house had been left off for viewing.
